Customer Service: 1. Abutment — In coal mining, 1 the weight of the rocks above a narrow roadway is transferred to the solid coal along the sides, which act as abutments of the arch of strata spanning the roadway; and 2 the weight of the rocks over a longwall face is transferred to the front abutment, that is, the solid coal ahead of the face and the back abutment, that is, the settled packs behind the face. Acid deposition or acid rain — Refers loosely to a mixture of wet and dry "deposition" deposited material from the atmosphere containing higher than "normal" amount of nitric and sulfuric acids. The precursors or chemical forerunners of acid rain formation result from both natural sources, such as volcanoes and decaying vegetation, and man-made sources, primarily emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides resulting from fossil fuel combustion. Acid mine water — Mine water that contains free sulfuric acid, mainly due to the weathering of iron pyrites.

Acidic precipitation - Snow and rain that have a low pH, caused by sulphur dioxide and nitric oxide gases from industrial activity released into the atmosphere. Acid mine drainage - Acidic run-off water from mine waste dumps and mill tailings ponds containing sulphide minerals. Also refers to ground water pumped to surface from mines. Mining is the extraction of valuable minerals or other geological materials from the Earth, usually from an ore body, lode , vein , seam , reef or placer deposit. These deposits form a mineralized package that is of economic interest to the miner. Ores recovered by mining include metals , coal , oil shale , gemstones , limestone , chalk , dimension stone , rock salt , potash , gravel , and clay. Mining is required to obtain any material that cannot be grown through agricultural processes, or feasibly created artificially in a laboratory or factory. Mining in a wider sense includes extraction of any non-renewable resource such as petroleum, natural gas, or even water.

A relatively rare crystal form of diamond having six equal-area faces at right angles to each other. A rectangular prism having squares for its ends and faces. A crystal form of six equivalent not necessarily square and mutually perpendicular faces, with indices of A hexahedron, a crystal form of the isometric system consisting of six mutually orthogonal planar faces. Conditions of growth may yield crystal faces that are not perfectly square, but are at mutual right angles. A diamond in cube form.
