The Last Summer (of You and Me) by Ann Brashares: | overtheroadtruckersdispatch.com: BooksReading Guide. May 06, ISBN Jul 05, ISBN From the New York Times- bestselling author of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Ann Brashares comes her first adult novel In the town of Waterby on Fire Island, the rhythms and rituals of summer are sacrosanct: the ceremonial arrivals and departures by ferry; yacht club dinners with terrible food and breathtaking views; the virtual decree against shoes; and the generational parade of sandy, sun-bleached kids, running, swimming, squealing, and coming of age on the beach. Petite, tenacious Riley is a tomboy and a lifeguard, always ready for a midnight swim, a gale-force sail, or a barefoot sprint down the beach. Beautiful Alice is lithe, gentle, a reader and a thinker, and worshipful of her older sister.

Two twentysomething sisters and Paul, their troubled, rich pal, grapple with serious issues: sex, career, and illness. Riley and Alice are sisters; their relationship is as potent and complex as the real thing. Funny, deep, and true, this one will keep you reading long after the sun has —Adriana Trigiani, gone down. Brashares is able to paint a beautiful picture of these troubled young people, who are at the beginning of their lives but are stuck at a crossroads, not knowing how to move on from their memories of Fire Island.
Her first novel for adults, and her first outside of her acclaimed Traveling Pants series, was released on June 6, by Riverhead Books. Alice, age 21, and Riley, 24, are two sisters. Nearly every summer of their lives, they have shared the same childhood friend, Paul, 24, whose widowed mother owns a Fire Island beach mansion next door to the smaller beach house of the girls and their parents. Paul has been absent for three summers, having been studying and volunteering in California. Alice is smart, graceful and elegant, planning on applying to law school at NYU. Riley is the athletic and adventurous one, having life-guarded on the island since she was fifteen. She is dyslexic and has attended outdoor leadership school in Colorado.
And every summer growing up, there was also Paul, a close friend to both girls. Now, after three summers away from the island, he's come back. But his return marks a season of change, of unspoken attractions, tragedy, and deep secrets that will launch three friends into an unfamiliar adult world, from which their summer haven can no longer protect them. The narration is divided between the viewpoints of the three main characters, Riley age 24 at the beginning of the book , her sister Alice age 21 at the beginning of the book , and their lifelong friend, Paul age 24 at the beginning of the book , and chronicles an eventful year that opens Paul's return to their summer home on Fire Island after missing the previous two summers.
