Concise, clear, and insightful, the book is the best short introduction to institutional theory in general and the contributions made particularly by sociologists. This book also contributes to the construction of general tools for studying institutions and organizations by providing comprehensive analytic concepts and frameworks. It will be one essential tool for my research and also my coursework. The author is very knowledgeable about the literature and does an effective job of integrating it into a framework for analysis. I think it is one of the most comprehensive books on institutional theory.

O rganizational theory proves useful for explaining much of what happens in higher education. In particular, I find institutional theory can help provide an explanation for institutional decisions and activities. Unfortunately, students often struggle with grasping some of the basics of institutional theory. Population ecology and resource dependency theory propose ways in which organizations can respond distinctively to environmental cues. Institutional theory aids our understanding of the pressures for institutions to become more similar, which decreases institutional diversity. Institutional theory describes how both deliberate and accidental choices lead institutions to mirror the norms, values, and ideologies of the organizational field. When an institution moves past these expectations, the environment views the characteristics as deviant and less likely to receive resources.

Recent developments in institutional theory are reviewed in order to provide a conceptual framework within which to locate and consider studies of changes in Chinese enterprise. Institutional theory emphasizes the role played by regulative, normative, and cultural-cognitive processes in shaping social behavior and social structure. Changes in Chinese organizations are described and evaluated at three levels: societal, organizational field state-owned enterprises , and individual organizations.
