In gender studies , hegemonic masculinity is part of R. Connell 's gender order theory , which recognizes multiple masculinities that vary across time, culture and the individual. Hegemonic masculinity is defined as a practice that legitimizes men's dominant position in society and justifies the subordination of the common male population and women, and other marginalized ways of being a man. As a sociological concept, the nature of hegemonic masculinity derives from the theory of cultural hegemony , by Marxist theorist Antonio Gramsci , which analyses the power relations among the social classes of a society. Hence, in the term hegemonic masculinity , the adjective hegemonic refers to the cultural dynamics by means of which a social group claims, and sustains, a leading and dominant position in a social hierarchy; nonetheless, hegemonic masculinity embodies a form of social organization that has been sociologically challenged and changed.

The essays are diverse and often demanding, ranging in style and scope from R. Connell's "autobiographical documentation of gender" to Marlon B. Ross's thought-provoking desire to "push the cultural logic of race castration [. It takes stock of a complex history of theoretical debate—a project begun in Gardiner's introduction and furthered by the opening two essays—and it seeks to push beyond reiteration to new possibilities in critical thinking about gender.

Does feminism hold the key to the development of more egalitarian forms of masculinity? Masculinity Studies and Feminist Theory addresses central questions about the analysis and construction of masculinity in contemporary society. The volume examines the ways male privilege and power are constituted and represented and explores the effect of such constructions on both men and women. Its authors share a conviction that such a link not only reveals the persistence, now more subtle and varied, of male entitlement but also promises to create an enriched and reinvigorated feminism for a new century.
