The explanations of old doctrines and presentation of new ones are convincing evidences of their divine origin. Enemies of the Church have rather carefully avoided the discussion of this book. Mormons are a religious group that embrace concepts of Christianity as well as revelations made by their founder, Joseph Smith. Another Mormon denomination, the Community of Christ, is centered in Independence, Missouri, and has about , members. The Mormon religion was officially founded in when The Book of Mormon was published. While Mormons embrace many Christian beliefs, they have their own distinct set of philosophies, values and practices. Joseph Smith Jr.

My beloved brethren and sisters, I rejoice in this great conference. I am a better man because I was here. I thank the Lord for the great record that has been made. This has been another glorious conference of the Church. I commend to each of you the counsel of these, my brethren, who have spoken to us. I love them and sustain them, and I love the members of the Church everywhere. And so it has through the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and other modern revelations.

The Book of Mormon was not just an important religious book for the membership of a relatively small nineteenth-century American church. Nor is it just an interesting record of an ancient people. The Book of Mormon is essential to the message of truth that Deity is imparting to man in this dispensation. He emphasized the warning of condemnation found in Doctrine and Covenants —58 if we neglect the Book of Mormon. The Doctrine and Covenants, however, does more than just warn us.

Account Options Sign in. - The book originally contained two parts: a sequence of lectures setting forth basic church doctrine, followed by a compilation of important revelations, or "covenants" of the church: thus the name "Doctrine and Covenants". The remaining portion of the book contains revelations on numerous topics, most of which were dictated by the movement's founder Joseph Smith , supplemented by materials periodically added by each denomination.

In this section we want to briefly examine the many changes that Joseph Smith made to the Doctrine and Covenants well after they were originally recorded. These changes are extremely important in understanding Joseph Smith's evolving theology as well as trying to understand why the direct commandments from God could be changed so vastly by Joseph as determined was necessary at given times. This section is important because both church leaders and apologists contend that the changes to the Doctrine Covenants have been mostly for grammar, spelling, or just small changes, but as we will detail here the changes not only altered the original commandments, but changed elements of church theology as well. If there have been any changes it would all have been fixing grammar or something like that. Joseph Fielding Smith: "Inspiration is discovered in the fact that each part, as it was revealed, dovetailed perfectly with what had come before.
