Merlin and the Book of Beasts - Movie ReviewsA group of knights enter the forest in search of Merlin the Magician, seeking his help. She pleads with Merlin to aid them against a new threat — that of The Arkadian who has overthrown Camelot with the aid of the Book of Beasts, which contains magical creatures imprisoned within its pages that can be released with a spell. Merlin declines to join them but later changes his mind. They set out on a quest in order for Avlynn to retrieve Excalibur and reclaim her birthright. All the while, their journey is beset by creatures that The Arkadian unleashes from the book. Merlin and the Book of Beasts was one of the numerous B-budget fantasy films churned out for the Syfy Channel in the mid-late 00s, all riffing off the renewed popularity of fantasy adventure on the screen following the success of the Lord of the Rings films.

In the twenty years since the fall of Camelot, Merlin has become a recluse known as "the wild man of the woods. When a powerful dark wizard calling himself the "Arcadian" assumes power over Britain by means of his magical "Book of Beasts", which can summon all kinds of nasty creatures but since it's a budget-conscient movie, all we see are butterflies, a single "dragon soldier" and Medusa and a couple of her Gorgon sisters. Never mind that they're Greek mythology to do his bidding, Sir Galahad, last surviving Knight of the original Round Table, his son Lysenor, Tristan's and Isolde's son Tristan proving his parents may be legend's greatest lovebirds, but worst name-givers and King Arthur's daughter Avelynn try to recruit Merlin,…. Schlechte Kulissen, Masken und generell ein zu geringes Budget sind wohl der Grund. Artus ist tot. Merlin verschollen. Die Ausgangslage des Plots sollte auch reichen um zu verstehen in welche Richtung sich der Film entwickelt.
