The Richard and Judy Book Club has shifted an incredible four million titles since it was launched in partnership with WHSmith 18 months ago. I was a young reporter for Yorkshire Television but, occupied as I was, something was missing. I felt oddly dissatisfied. For example, Operation Mincemeat is a book about an elaborate true-life Second World War intelligence scam — British spies hoodwinking the Nazis into believing the Allies are about to invade Greece in reality, Sicily. That kind of story is right up my street but the chances of Judy picking it off a shelf would be about zero. However, Operation Mincemeat was up for consideration for the club, so Judy had to read it. And she loved it.
