All Things Bright and Beautiful

Millions of readers have delighted in the wonderful storytelling and everyday miracles of James Herriot in the over thirty years since his delightful animal stories were first introduced to the world. Now in a new edition for the first time in a decade, All Things Bright and Beautiful is the beloved sequel to Herriot's first collection, All Creatures Great and Small , and picks up as Herriot, now newly married, journeys among the remote hillside farms and valley towns of the Yorkshire Dales, caring for their inhabitantsboth two- and four-legged. Throughout, Herriot's deep compassion, humor, and love of life shine out as we laugh, cry, and delight in his portraits of his many, varied animal patients and their equally varied owners. The world's most beloved animal doctor delightfully continues where he left off in All Creatures Great and Small with new adventures through the Yorkshire dales-- and a whole new menagerie of memorable patients. He showed me how to focus not just on the animals, but on the people who lived with the animals, and their loving, sometimes difficult and very wonderful connections with one another. While he is known for his wonderful writing about animals, I often think of his ability to capture people.

All things bright and beautiful; all creatures great and small; all things wise and wonderful, the incredible Ashley Bryan illustrates them all! Alexander would eventually write over hymns and many poems. The welfare of children was deeply important to her. She donated the proceeds from her book Hymns for Little Children from which All Things Bright and Beautiful comes, to help build and maintain a school for children who were deaf or mute. Ashley Bryan grew up to the sound of his mother singing from morning to night, and he has shared the joy of song with children ever since. He lives in Islesford, one of the Cranberry Isles off the coast of Maine. The images come to a climax in a gorgeous, double-page spread of two young girls, one black, one white, celebrating who they are and what they see in the world: children, flowers, mountains, trees, stars, the moon, and the sun.

There have also been other adaptations, such as a full choral piece by John Rutter. The chorus has been recommended as a Christian song for children to learn, even for children up to five years of age. It consists of a series of stanzas that elaborate upon verses of the Apostles' Creed. It may have been inspired by Psalm , verses 24 and "Oh Lord, how manifold are thy works! So is this great and wide sea, wherein are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts". The hymn may have been inspired as well by a verse from Samuel Taylor Coleridge 's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner : "He prayeth best, who loveth best; All things great and small; For the dear God who loveth us; He made and loveth all.
