Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Summary

We've seen Shakespearean theater with sword fights and gender-bending. We've seen depressing plays about death, sales, and death of salesmen. We've seen musicals based on movies and musicals that got turned into movies. But we've never seen anything like Harry Potter and the Cursed Child … and not just because we'll be waiting half a decade to get tickets to the show. Beginning eighteen years after the conclusion of the final novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows , Cursed Child shows us how Harry is adapting to his greatest challenge, a struggle more difficult than vanquishing the most evil wizard in the world: parenthood.

Through reviews, articles and discussions, we want to spark intellectual thought, spiritual growth and a desire to follow the command of Colossians "See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ. Just today I was reading Psalm 37 and thinking about how your ministry provides ways to 'dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Plugged In has become a significant compass for our family. All three of our kids are dedicated to their walk with Christ but they still encounter challenges.

From a nineteen year old captivated by Stephen Fry's complete reading of Philosopher's Stone on New Year's Day of , to a Potter obsessed undergraduate making a wand out of a twig and shoe polish for a Harry Potter party, to a slightly more jaded post grad getting together with an old friend to finish the series with a spectacular 24 hour reading and a slight sense of melancholy in , I can't deny Harry Potter has had a huge effect on my life as an adult. To add a new chapter to that story, reading through the script of Cursed Child with my new and absolutely wonderful wife seems extremely apt, as does writing this review. Cursed Child begins with that famous scene from the epilogue of Deathly Hallows with Harry, Ron, Hermione and indeed Draco Malfoy seeing their children onto the Hogwarts express. The story follows an unlikely friendship between Harry's middle son Albus Severus, and Draco Malfoy's son Scorpius, meeting on the train to Hogwarts in a scene that consciously mirror's Harry's first meeting with Ron and Hermione. One major thing which this story gets spot on and which I recognized instantly is the instant complexity and realism of its characters. Albus is the slightly overlooked middle child of a famous father, while Scorpius has to live with not only a father who is an ex-deatheater, but the suspicion of being thought the son of Lord Voldemort. The comradeship between two outcasts, and two boys who plainly find Hogwarts anything but the magical haven we're used to is one of the most lovely parts of the story, indeed I was a little sorry that the story quickly skips from Albus' first to his fourth year, and we see very few of his fellow students particularly since it might have given us a chance to see some other aspects of Hogwarts not noticeable in the books.

Albus is afraid he will break the family tradition and be sorted into Slytherin rather than Gryffindor. Scorpius is sorted into Slytherin, then in a complete surprise Albus Potter is sorted into Slytherin. Rose is sorted into Gryffindor and becomes popular as Albus shows no particular magical aptitude, thus widening the distance between her and her cousin Albus. Scorpius and Albus are friends, but rumors about Scorpius's birth cause him to be an outcast. Draco Malfoy is tormented by rumors that Voldemort used a Time-Turner to impregnate his wife Astoria to give birth to Scorpius. He asks Harry Potter for a statement that all Time-Turners have all been destroyed. Harry is then visited by Amos Diggory and his niece Delphi , who each want Harry to go back in time to the Triwizard tournament and save his son, Cedric, since he was an innocent victim of Lord Voldemort.

Albus is over the whole Hogwarts thing before he even gets there. Not only is he sorted into Slytherin—let's hope he inherited his dad's fluency in Parseltongue—he has trouble flying, stinks at Quidditch, and is known as Harry Potter's "disappointing son. However, there's a fizzing whizbee buried in this pile of centaur dung that is Albus' life. He finds his best friend, Scorpius Malfoy. By their fourth year, the pair is inseparable, despite Harry's wish that his son not be friends with his childhood rival's kid. Oh, and there's the little matter of a rumor that Scorpius is actually Voldemort's son. The-rumored-son-of-he-who-must-not-be-named is the longest nickname ever, so we'll ignore that rumor for a while.
