The Lightning Thief Chapter 1 SummaryPercy Jackson is a twelve-year-old boy from New York City, and up until a few months ago he was a boarding student at Yancy Academy, a private boarding school for troubled kids in upstate New York. He says he didn't want to be a half-blood, and advises any readers who think they might be one to close this book immediately. He backs up to tell the story of how it all started. He and his sixth-grade class at Yancy go on a field trip to Manhattan to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, planning to see ancient Greek and Roman artifacts. Brunner, their Latin teacher whom Percy really likes, is leading the trip. Percy hopes he will not get in trouble on this trip, but he starts to get mad when Nancy Bobofit throws bits of peanut butter at his best friend Grover.
The Lightning Thief Summary and Analysis of Chapters 1-3
Percy is able to defeat the monster through the use of a bronze sword. In the aftermath of the attack though Percy is surprised to find that nobody has ever heard of the math teacher before, making him wonder if it had been real or just a hallucination. Not even his best friend, Grover, knows what he is talking about. As the end of the year draws near Grover insists on escorting Percy home from school. His mother, Sally, is a kind-hearted woman who longs to be a writer.
The book opens with a warning to the reader. If the reader is trying to find out about half-bloods or thinks that they might be one, they should put the book down because they could be placing themselves in danger. Percy is a year-old boy living in New York and, as he states in the opening chapter, he's been sent to a boarding school called Yancy Academy, which is for troubled students. He is considered a troubled kid because he can't read English, though he finds out at the Museum that he CAN read ancient Greek He also challenges authority and is impulsive.
Percy never wanted to be a half-blood and if you think you might be one take his advice and quit reading now. Believe whatever lies your parents told you and lead a normal life, for being a half-blood is dangerous. If, on the other hand, you are just a normal kid who is reading this as fiction then by all means continue. The whole way into the city Percy had to deal with Nancy Bobofit harassing Grover, his best friend, by hitting him in the back of the head with chunks of a peanut butter-and-ketchup sandwich.
